This happened in early November 19, I 56m was in a big chain home improvement store pricing out material I needed for a project at my godson’s dance school, I was in no hurry and was just wandering around the store pricing the things I would need to build 10 foot tall candy canes.
So I’m wandering around with my phone out taking pictures of the material I would need so I could make the price proposal for the owners of the dance school. I’m not following any specific path through the store, just taking my time minding my own business.
This sweet older lady comes up to me and asks if I could help her, she explains how she is looking for a light fixture for her bedroom to replace the one in the ceiling, she tells me that she has an electrician doing some work in her home and this guy said if she picked out a new light fixture he would install it for her, but she told me she didn’t even know where the lighting section was in the store, so she would really appreciate my help.
Now since I was not on any kind of a time line I told her I’d be happy to help her, so we went over to the lighting section, she was impressed by the selections but also clearly overwhelmed, we talked about what she wanted for he new bedroom light, we explored the options, I asked her questions like, did she want a light with a fan, or something more basic, did she want a lot of light, less light, something more modern, or more traditional. She considered things and we looked at dozens of light fixtures, neither of us was in a hurry, we both seemed to be enjoying our time together.
While we were shopping for her new light she told me all about her family, how her husband of 35 years had passed away, and all about her 4 children and her grand children, and even some of her friends, she seemed to be really enjoying having someone new to talk to.
Finally she selected her new light fixture, it was a more traditional chandelier type light fixture that she was just thrilled about, she couldn’t wait to see it installed in her bedroom, I walked to the check out with her and then helped her get it in her car, she thanked me profusely, then she said she wanted me to come back inside while she told my manager what a truly wonderful employee I was, I smiled and let her know I didn’t actually work there, she looked confused and asked me if I didn’t work there why I helped her, I said she needed help and I was happy to help out, I was just being nice. She gave me a quick hug and told me I just made her whole day and thanked me again.
No evil raging Karen but a nice little encounter anyway.
I really hope she likes her new bedroom light.
