‘The Grand High Witch was a total collaboration between costumes, hair and make-up, the writers, my dialect coach, the effects department, stunts, [director] Bob Zemeckis and myself,’ Hathaway recently told People.

‘She is such a weirdo – so silly and over the top – and everyone had to work together to be on the same page so it felt big and entertaining but never too much.’

Last Wednesday, the former child star’s onscreen nemesis – Octavia Spencer – shared her own BTS on-set snap of her character The Grandmother lounging on a couch.

The 47-year-old Oscar winner also posted a video of herself goofing around with her three mice castmates and singing Dionne Warwick’s 1985 song That’s What Friends Are For.

In the Oscar-winning director’s 1967-set remake of the 1983 children’s novel, Spencer and her seven-year-old orphaned grandson Charlie (Jahzir Bruno) face off against a coven set on transforming children into mice.

In Dahl’s novel, all witches possess purple eyes, bald heads, elongated mouths, claws instead of hands, no toes, and larger sensitive nostrils – which they try to conceal in public.

In the trailer, Anne’s character is seen floating but her version of The Grand High Witch is not nearly as grotesque as Angelica Huston’s eight-hour prosthetic job in Nicolas Roeg’s 1990 version.

However, Roald reportedly did approve of the casting of the 66-year-old Oscar winner as the elegant and glamorous, Miss Ernst.

‘Would you please take a moment to join me in celebrating Anjelica Huston’s flawless and iconic turn as The Grand High Witch?’ Hathaway gushed on October 9.

‘Her performance is magnificent – witty, unforgettable, scary as hell and sheer perfection (the scene where she pushes the baby down the cliff still gives me chills to this day). I just wanted to say, one AH to another, that I tip my wig to the O.G.G.H.W. Anjelica Huston.’
